Santiago Huron

Dear Vision Forum Ministries:

Santiago Thomas Huron, Jr. was born March 3rd, 1998 into the loving arms of our large family. “Santi”, as we affectionately call him, is the tenth born child of our twelve children and is indeed, “fearfully and wonderfully made”. Before the age of three months, Santi underwent four surgeries for the repair of hernias and the insertion of a gastro-intestinal tube. For the succeeding five years of his life, he would battle severe gastro-intestinal reflux, requiring medication, therapy, and careful diet.

At the age of three, the extreme curve of Santi’s spine became a real concern. After finally locating an orthopedist at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, a series of procedures were taken to control the “corkscrew” style curve of his spine. After braces and therapy failed, surgery remained the only option. Santi underwent two surgeries at the age of three to insert steel rods; unfortunately, these surgeries also proved to be failures.

Santi’s final surgery took place on March 8th, 2004, consisting of the insertion of two titanium rods wrapped in wire supported by titanium plates. His spine is now fused from the seventh thoracic vertebrae to his pelvis, resulting in a growth of 8 inches in height! This radical fusion procedure prevents Santi from some normal movements we all take for granted, but doesn’t stop him from enjoying running, jumping, and playing in the ocean!

It’s been nine months now since the last surgery and we are thrilled with the success of the fusion. Santi is now growing, though may never reach even five feet of height in his lifetime and because of his straightened posture is now free of reflux discomfort, thereby eliminating the need for medications.

The costs of these surgeries and orthotics have reached well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. God has truly met our every need as we have trusted Him. We are truly thankful for the Life and Liberty Fund as they have generously given to the Lord in behalf of our son, Santi.

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” — II Corinthians 12:9

Sinecerly,

Santiago Huron, Sr.
