Reformation Study Resources

As an important supplement to your Reformation study, and to the Reformation Online Study Course in particular, we have put together a short list of recommended resources, all available in one set for your convenience. These resources do not duplicate the material presented in the course, but they will provide important context for the instructors’ comments, enabling students to retain more, ask more intelligent questions, and understand the connections between personalities, events, and ideas on a more integrated level.

John Calvin: Man of the Millennium

Great as a family read-aloud, this volume brings to life the pivotal moments of Calvin’s life, including his sudden conversion to Christ; his unforgettable call to Geneva by William Farel; his ongoing struggle with the Libertines; and his marriage and love for his wife, Idelette. It illustrates the key elements of his theology; explains the important roles that he played as theologian, pastor, educator, and statesman; and examines the transformational impact that he had.

How the Scots Saved Christendom

Journey with us through the moors and glens of Scotland for a riveting survey of God’s providential work in this remarkable land. Learn of the wonders of Iona, a tiny island that served as a missionary outpost from which Christianity spread throughout the world. Walk the trail of John Knox — a galley slave-turned freedom fighter — who confronted Mary, Queen of Scots, face-to-face in Edinburgh as he led Scotland’s Reformation. Join us on the battlefields of Wallace and Bruce, and halt with us as we remember the legacy of the Covenanters, 18,000 of whom gave their lives for freedom. And enjoy the powerful music of one of the world’s leading Celtic balladeers, Charlie Zahm, as he plays his anthems in the land of the Scots.

Reformation and Revival: The Story of the English Puritans

In 1558, the death of Bloody Mary and the accession of Elizabeth I to England’s throne offered new hope to thousands of exiled Protestants who returned to Britain en masse. Their aim — to see Christ’s Church purified. This book tells their story, chronicling the tragedies and triumphs that the Puritans experienced as they engaged the English Crown and the established Church on matters of faith and practice. An excellent survey of the Puritan’s struggle for religious liberty and impact on Western culture, Reformation and Revival offers readers a window into the Puritan world that gave us the likes of Bunyan, Baxter, Owen, and Cromwell on Britain’s shores, as well as such leaders as Winthrop and the Mathers who established the great Puritan settlement in North America. We owe the Puritans a real debt, and their legacy has much to teach us about advancing the cause of Christ amidst difficulty.

In the Name of God, Amen

There is no subject more directly connected with the prosperity of the Christian home, the integrity of the local church, or the success of national governments than that of the covenantal nature of life, law, and relationships. The Bible begins and ends with the doctrine of covenant. The history of the world, of nations, and individuals can only be understood in terms of those who kept covenant with God, and those who did not. Published by Lex Rex Publishing, In The Name of God, Amen, by Dan Ford, is a large, visually gorgeous hardback book which brings a scholarly but accessible history and analysis of the influence of covenants and covenantal thinking on the family, the church, and the state. Put another way, In the Name of God, Amen is a history of freedom.
